What is TOVA?
The Test of Variables of Attention (TOVA) is a computerized, FDA-cleared assessment that measures attention and impulse control. Often called the “Gold Standard” for attention testing, it helps evaluate ADHD and other attention-related challenges in children and adults.
Why TOVA is Important
- Accurate ADHD Diagnosis: Detects attention deficits and impulsivity.
- Monitor Treatment: Tracks how well interventions and medications are working.
- Research & Understanding: Supports studies on attention and cognitive function.
How the Test Works
- 21.6 minutes, non-invasive, and culture- and language-free
- Respond to visual or auditory cues using a precise button press
- Measures response speed, consistency, missed responses, and impulsivity
- Results compared to age- and gender-matched norms and ADHD populations
Types of TOVA Tests
- Visual: Uses visual cues to assess attention
- Auditory: Uses sound cues, ideal for those with visual challenges
Who Should Consider TOVA
- Individuals with attention difficulties
- Suspected ADHD cases
- Patients tracking ADHD treatment progress
Preparing for Your Test
- Rest well the night before and eat a light meal 1–2 hours prior
- Avoid caffeine before the test
- For follow-ups, taking the test while on prescribed stimulants is okay
Cost & Insurance
- Initial TOVA Test: $200
- Follow-up TOVA Test: $100
- Typically not covered by insurance; fees are due before testing
Ensuring Accurate Results
TOVA detects if the test is not taken seriously. Flagged results may not generate a report.
