Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder

Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder (DMDD): When Anger Feels Out of Control

All kids get moody or upset sometimes - but when anger and frustration become constant and extreme, it could be something more. DMDD is a mental health condition that affects children and teens. It causes severe mood swings, intense temper outbursts, and constant irritability that make everyday life hard - for the child and for those around them.

What Are the Signs of DMDD?
Children with DMDD show ongoing and intense emotional reactions that are more than just typical childhood behavior. Common signs include:

  • Frequent temper outbursts: These can be yelling, hitting, or other intense behaviors that happen at least 3 times a week
  • Constant irritability or anger: The child seems upset, cranky, or easily annoyed most of the day, nearly every day
  • Long-lasting symptoms: The mood issues and outbursts have been going on for at least 12 months
  • Trouble in daily life: These emotional struggles affect the child in multiple areas—like school, home, or friendships

Why Early Help Matters
DMDD can make it hard for a child to succeed at school, get along with others, or feel good about themselves. But the good news is that treatment can help children learn to manage their emotions, improve behavior, and build better relationships.

How Is DMDD Treated?
Treatment is personalized, but it often includes:

  • Therapy: Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) or parent training can teach kids and families how to handle strong emotions and reduce outbursts
  • Medication: Sometimes, medications can be used to help with mood symptoms
  • Support at school and home: Creating a structured, supportive environment can make a big difference
